I made mistakes of telling you the things I don’t believe You listened closely but you did not receive I never really noticed as you grew cold Your silence made me bold I thought things were good You thought things were bad Now we won’t recover what we never really had All the people on the ground Build you up then tear you down Bury you without a sound Won’t someone help us I made mistakes of telling you the things I think I get You said that you don’t get them but it’s not over yet I guess I never knew there was a warning in your words So I guess you never listened and I never heard You said folks were good I said folks were bad Now we won’t recover what we never really had All the people here below Talk of things that we don’t know And yet we never let them go Won’t someone help us I made mistakes oh all along the way With folks like you with nothing more to say Deep inside is a stone cold heart I should have known it from the start Plus you think that you’re good I think we’re all bad Now we won’t recover what we never really had All the people have no voice Then they take away your choice That they aren’t you makes them rejoice Won’t someone help us

Some city is where you’d rather be At least they’d know you’d exist and you’d have some company Oh the noises in the night Somehow they give comfort in this everlasting fight You keep talking about getting away But please don’t take anything for your pain It’s not worth it; it never is Mother says you could marry again Somehow you still can choose And you think you’ve lost it all, but there’s more that you could lose The ending it’s not here yet It’s no good when you remember that you can’t forget You keep talking about getting away But please don’t take anything for your pain It’s not worth it; it never is Mother says you could marry again There were good years every now and then There was the summer by the river And the winter when your friends finally came through like friends should In a way that you never could You keep talking about getting away But please don’t take anything for your pain It’s not worth it; it never is Mother says you could marry again

One little heart broken in two Things aren’t working so here’s what you do Come for a while stay at my place And it’s all for free Two little hearts on different roads Come together to lighten your load There’s a place with a porch and a big back yard And it’s all for free Smoke cigarettes, Watch cable tv Drink a 12 pac of beer, but don’t mind me I’ll just fix my toilet that you destroyed And that’s free too! Three little hearts all alone When you can’t make it on your own Take out your frustrations on kitchen walls And that’s free as well Now four little hearts and the money is tight You can stay right here, and it’s all right Tell your cousins, and the neighbor, and the neighbor’s dog That they can stay for free too! Just blame the system blame the schools Blame the judge, all those fools Blame everybody for another 30 days While you live for free! You know what I like, it’s so much fun To work three jobs and when I’m done I can leave my family and take care of yours And that’s free too! One little heart broken in two Things aren’t working so here’s what you do Come for a while stay at my place And it’s all for free

Little Annie we’ve had more trouble Ever since you came to town You’ve been walking up the avenue You’ve turned us upside down The trouble is your father Is meaner than a springtime bear When we watch you walking by You should see his stare They say he killed a man in Georgia Put him in the ground And when that posse came after him He took that posse down Little Annie we’ve got trouble And trouble’s ain’t hard to find I wanna take you down to the courthouse square Just to make you mine But little Annie there’s your brother Slippier than a serpant’s tongue They say he even scares your father And he’s out here on the run Little Annie it’s a mystery Just how you came to be Because when I saw your mother I wished the sun would’ve blinded me Little Annie we’ve had more trouble Ever since you came to town You’ve been walking up the avenue You’ve turned us upside downLittle Annie I’ve an idea It just came to me And we can run through that mountain pass And take to the sea

Lost and lonely tired and torn Now I've finally stopped falling away Sad and angry bitter and worn Now I've finally stopped falling away My soul was heavy those chains were strong I was a shadow of what I could be And then it changed when you came along Now I've finally stopped falling away Start your clapping and stomp your feet Now I've finally stopped falling away Tell everybody all that you meet Now I've finally stopped falling away My soul was heavy those chains were strong I was a shadow of what I could be And then I changed when you came along Now I've finally stopped falling away Gotta choose something; choose what’s right Now I've finally stopped falling away Even old Hank he saw the light Now I've finally stopped falling away My soul was heavy those chains were strong I was a shadow of what I could be But this changed when you came along Now I've finally stopped falling away My adversary is now a friend Oh I've finally stopped falling away Oh the end is where I begin Now I've finally stopped falling away My soul was heavy those chains were strong I was a shadow of what I could be But this changed when you came along Now I've finally stopped falling away

Daddy was a stranger, mama wasn’t smart Falling for a man who’d tear everything apart Mama’d find new love about every single year And that stranger would come home crazy And the love would disappear They found a body on the river shore They don’t who did it, and what they did it for But if they ever asked me, I couldn’t tell a lie It doesn’t bother me to see a stranger go and die And that stranger had power, so hard to explain For one I guess I looked like him, and two I had his name The stranger made me anxious, the stranger made me cry And scared of every other stranger passing by They found a body on the river shore They don’t who did it, and what they did it for But if they ever asked me, I couldn’t tell a lie It doesn’t bother me to see a stranger go and die Mama found a new love, a Stranger in the sky He’s bigger, he’s better, and he lifts her up on high I guess the best kind of stranger is one you cannot see Who talks to you in your head and tells you that you’re free They found a body on the river shore They don’t who did it, and what they did it for But if they ever asked me, I couldn’t tell a lie It doesn’t bother me to see a stranger go and die
