about

For years I've walked by a desk with a computer and a mousepad in the place where I work. It's in a room with no windows and the now faded mousepad is a picture of a beautiful beach.

It makes me sad.

The song came from this mousepad. It's a strange one with words that aren't used very often, words like "reefer" and "Aretha" and "desecration". The whole song feels like an incoherent time capsule to me but I like playing it.

lyrics

Mom is back on the reefer now that summer’s gone
That clock keeps ticking like the nights grow long
Dad is in the basement where he’s laying low
He said he’ll come out but to take it slow

Aretha I’ve been trying since I’ve been told
Aretha I’ve been trying but it’s growing old

There’s a picture on the mousepad of the sun and sand
We always talk about it but we’ve never been
It’s somewhere on an island, on a beach
Some other place that we’ll never reach

Aretha I’ve been trying since I’ve been told
Aretha I’ve been trying but it’s growing old

Rise up to the occasion, be a different kind of man
Stand upon their shoulders, do everything you can

There are stories in the Bible that are hard to know
Tales of desecration blow by blow
You tell me all about them so I don’t feel bad
But I can’t help but notice they never make you sad

Aretha I’ve been trying since I’ve been told
Aretha I’ve been trying but it’s growing old
