about

A while back I took a walk with my daughter from my house to a downtown garage where I was getting my car fixed. The houses and streets were broken and decayed. It reminded me of walks I've had in the past in places that are considered to be developing countries, but in this case, it's more of an un-developing country, which somehow sadder.

And more recently, the expression the "last of the Americans" came up in a conversation, and this song came out of this.

lyrics

Look away as you look around
Avert your eyes as it’s sinking down
Say goodbye to the last American
No more heroes standing tall
They’re drug off and drugged, we like our heroes small
Give my regard to the last American

Red and white and the deepest blue
There’s nothing they won’t try to take from you
Take it all from the last American
Conversations inside your head
Are better than the ones that leave you dead
You’ve gone and talked to the last American

Oh to run oh to ride
To go and find a place where you can hide
Oh to raise up a child in a way that’s real
Oh to write oh to read
To stop the things that you don’t need
Oh to raise up a thought that they cannot steal

Do not speak and don’t defend
Do not fight until the bitter end
Watch it fall, the last American
Celebrate as you redefine
Unlearn and learn what’ll break your mind
Unleash it all on the last American

Oh to run oh to ride
To go and find a place where you can hide
Oh to raise up a child in a way that’s real
Oh to write oh to read
To stop the things that you don’t need
Oh to raise up a thought that they cannot steal

Mama there’s a scene that I remember
You were crying and why I didn’t know
You couldn’t say, but something happened
I could only hold on and hope that it would go

Look away as you look around
Avert your eyes as it’s sinking down
Say goodbye to the last American
No more heroes standing tall
They’re drug off and drugged, we like our heroes small
Give my regard to the last American
Give my regard to the last American
