I thought we all read those pages from long ago Those who claimed to be good could crush other’s souls Oh we’d sing truth to power, but now it’s power to truth And it’s the end of an era with you It’s the end of an era but I guess that’s okay I never really belonged anyway It’s the end of an era but what can you do I’ll just be myself with you Now the folks up above have changed the ones down below But the ones down below there are things they don’t know They never knew what they had if they don’t know it’s gone And it’s the end of an era with you It’s the end of an era but I guess that’s okay I never really belonged anyway It’s the end of an era but what can you do I’ll just be myself with you A song needs to be a sung, and a light needs to light Truth gotta be real, and someones needs to fight Maybe it needs to be shouted that everything’s wrong And it’s the end of an era with you It’s the end of an era but I guess that’s okay I never really belonged anyway It’s the end of an era but what can you do I’ll just be myself with you

Mom is back on the reefer now that summer’s gone That clock keeps ticking like the nights grow long Dad is in the basement where he’s laying low He said he’ll come out but to take it slow Aretha I’ve been trying since I’ve been told Aretha I’ve been trying but it’s growing old There’s a picture on the mousepad of the sun and sand We always talk about it but we’ve never been It’s somewhere on an island, on a beach Some other place that we’ll never reach Aretha I’ve been trying since I’ve been told Aretha I’ve been trying but it’s growing old Rise up to the occasion, be a different kind of man Stand upon their shoulders, do everything you can There are stories in the Bible that are hard to know Tales of desecration blow by blow You tell me all about them so I don’t feel bad But I can’t help but notice they never make you sad Aretha I’ve been trying since I’ve been told Aretha I’ve been trying but it’s growing old
3.
You’re off to find a some peace of mind Or a little time, it isn’t clear If I had a say it wouldn’t be this way You’d always stay somewhere near Every other road is closing down Every other road is closing down Every other road is closing down It’s been so long but it goes on What’s right seems wrong and then right again It could take you low the place you go But you won’t know until you’ve been Every other road is closing down Every other road is closing down Every other road is closing down Would you ease my heart it it fell apart Would it be a start to something new If you broke down I’d still come around Find solid ground me and you Every other road is closing down Every other road is closing down Every other road is closing down

Those trains keep rolling through about three times a day Now when I hear their whistle I bow down and pray Lord have mercy is what I say And me oh my oh can’t leave Ohio too soon The folks out in the east and think they have control Controlling a burn but watch those billows roll Into Montreal and all the way to Seoul Me oh my oh can’t leave Ohio too soon That Norfolk Southern it gets around Burning bridges in every other town A fiery furnace to bring us down Me oh my oh can’t leave Ohio too soon So take me to a place where there is no railroad track No asphalt no lights and no going back And when I look out at night all I see is black Me oh my oh can’t leave Ohio too soon Next time I'm in a pickle now knowing what I know Gonna take my kids and just go go go Maybe live off the land somewhere down in Mexico Me oh my oh can’t leave Ohio too soon
5.
Well I finally left Ohio To see what was going on The other side of the ocean Looking for some fun (or maybe someone) And I slept out on the sidewalks I took the railroad tracks I floated down the rivers And I never did look back (I heard someone say) Hello nice to meet you You come from far away, far away Please don’t you leave now Won’t you come back someday, someday Well everything was different But everything was the same Everybody gets a little hungry Everybody has a funny name And people like a little music When they’re feeling blue Everybody wants somebody To help them make it through (make it through) Hello nice to meet you You come from far away, far away Please don’t you leave now Won’t you come back someday, someday Sunny rain cloudy sun Morning supper midnight run Sandy sandals busted toes Traffic stops then it flows Need a witness I’m right here Tomorrow’s far today is near Leave a flower lend a hand Like they do in Amsterdam Well I guess I’m never really home now But I’m never really gone I know I’m not alone now Those voices carry on (carry on) Hello nice to meet you You come from far away, far away Please don’t you leave now Won’t you come back someday, someday
6.
Me and my religion tend to disagree I like going on my own you like some company Oh my religion I am trying to get along Trying to settle on when it’s right and when its wrong Me and my religion we don’t see eye to eye You’re always pushing forward I’m barely getting by Oh my religion I guess that I am glad That you remind to remember when I forget that I am bad Me and my religion sometimes go our separate ways You’re a stone on a mountain while I’m drifting in the haze Oh my religion I lost you once or twice You said that I was out of line I thought that you weren’t nice Me and my religion have had our ups and downs But when I’m on the loose you always come around Oh my religion I guess were here to stay My father and his father they prayed it’d be this way
7.
The time has come the time has come We’ve gotta roll run run run The time has come the time has come The end is finally here Take my hand take my hand we’ll do the best the best we can Take my hand take my hand Show me that you’re near The forest floor the forest floor an open sky and door to door The forest floor is where we’ll mostly stay The fire light light the fire light will keep us warm in the dead of night The firelight the firelight Will help us on our way It’s nothing new nothing new If you stay here long They'll come for you Nothing new nothing new We’ll do what we can do When the fighting starts when the fighting starts We’ll rise up like a work of art When the fighting starts the fighting starts The love will shine right through
8.
Man oh man am I awake, everything is broken but it still won’t break And it looks the same someway Man oh man but it’s not, and knowing doesn’t help because what I thought Wasn’t real, wasn’t there somehow The river’s is flowing the sun is shining A voice is calling and it goes on The breeze is blowing, the clouds are rolling The water’s reflecting, that nothing’s wrong Man oh man while I slept the darkness came and crept and crept Now I see it all around Man oh man it’s in a smile in the eyes in every little sweet surprise In the calm of a summer night The river’s is flowing the sun is shining A voice is calling and it goes on The breeze is blowing, the clouds are rolling The water’s reflecting, that nothing’s wrong Man oh man to arrive to be breathing and to be alive In the end is this we have Man oh man to believe, to forgive and to receive To never know maybe it’s okay The river’s is flowing the sun is shining A voice is calling and it goes on The breeze is blowing, the clouds are rolling The water’s reflecting, that nothing’s wrong

Joe met Janice on a Saturday night He was riding high she was hanging tight And once again, he was up to no good But the stars were out and she was tired of the neighborhood No matter what they had a lot to say If you’re right you are wrong if it’s not their way They think they know what’s good and bad for you So she finally had enough she gonna do what she want to She gonna dance on Saturday, ask forgiveness on Sunday Call in sick on Monday, go fishing on Tuesday, Put a cap on Wednesday, Thursday/Friday start it all again Joe asked her the best two stepping song She said with Chattahoochee you can’t go wrong But Dumas Walker rises to the top Then his head began to spin and his heart just about done stop Now he’d broken one or two before But he was worried because he wanted her more For the first time he didn’t know what to do We laughed at poor Joe saying what’s gotten into you She gonna dance on Saturday, ask forgiveness on Sunday Call in sick on Monday, go fishing on Tuesday, Put a cap on Wednesday, Thursday/Friday start it all again While they danced the Do-Si-Do Janice told Joe all about Van Gogh And they both looked up into that starry night He knew right then that things are gonna be alright They're gonna dance on Saturday, ask forgiveness on Sunday Call in sick on Monday, go fishing on Tuesday, Put a cap on Wednesday, Thursday/Friday start it all again

No more worry, no more troubled mind No more scattered thoughts being confused in time No more pain, no more falling down No more giving in to lies Well now Marie we’ve been around so long I can almost see the end Well now Marie it’s like the speed of light from the time that we began No more wonder no more magic spark No more late night talking in the dark No more comfort that I’m not alone No old stories no one else knows Well now Marie we’ve been around so long I can almost see the end Well now Marie it’s like the speed of light from the time that we began No more anger about the things that make us mad No more working through all the things we never had No more memories that we haven’t shared No more building something new Well now Marie we’ve been around so long I can almost see the end Well now Marie it’s like the speed of light from the time that we began

Look away as you look around Avert your eyes as it’s sinking down Say goodbye to the last American No more heroes standing tall They’re drug off and drugged, we like our heroes small Give my regard to the last American Red and white and the deepest blue There’s nothing they won’t try to take from you Take it all from the last American Conversations inside your head Are better than the ones that leave you dead You’ve gone and talked to the last American Oh to run oh to ride To go and find a place where you can hide Oh to raise up a child in a way that’s real Oh to write oh to read To stop the things that you don’t need Oh to raise up a thought that they cannot steal Do not speak and don’t defend Do not fight until the bitter end Watch it fall, the last American Celebrate as you redefine Unlearn and learn what’ll break your mind Unleash it all on the last American Oh to run oh to ride To go and find a place where you can hide Oh to raise up a child in a way that’s real Oh to write oh to read To stop the things that you don’t need Oh to raise up a thought that they cannot steal Mama there’s a scene that I remember You were crying and why I didn’t know You couldn’t say, but something happened I could only hold on and hope that it would go Look away as you look around Avert your eyes as it’s sinking down Say goodbye to the last American No more heroes standing tall They’re drug off and drugged, we like our heroes small Give my regard to the last American Give my regard to the last American

Darling your the reason I’m finally hanging on I haven’t been so crazy since you came along I even got me a shave and a new Sunday suit And it’s all because of you If I had a dollar, if I had a day All my time and money would surely come your way We could drive past Flippin all the way to Mountain Home And watch the sun til it disappears Darling your the reason I’m finally standing straight I say please sir, and thank you, now I appreciate All the little things and the things I never knew Now you’re always, always on my mind I’d love to see the world or at least all of Arkansas But if you’re weren’t there and even if I saw it all It wouldn’t be as easy and wouldn’t be as sweet All my somethings would be nothing without you

about

Series Notes:

"Homes Sessions Volume 6" is a song-of-the-month project as a follow up to Volumes 1-5 in which one new song is released each month.

For Volume 1, each song was a live recording into my computer mic (with no layering or editing), and involved anyone I happened to be around that year. This project involved Sister Sarah (February), the MRB (October), and even a Turkish band (May) I played with during some time spent in eastern Turkey during that year.

For Volume 2, I had a new mic which helped to improve the quality, and tried out some layering as well. Things got a little crazy with some songs, (September) but it sure was fun.

Volume 3 included more collaboration, with friends both home and far away, and even at a live show with the audience.

Volume 4 was a mix of no layering, collaboration, and revisiting some older songs I had written.

Volume 5 came out of the 2020-21 lockdowns. Some songwriters were prolific during that time, but not me. During this time I realized a lot of inspiration for writing songs comes from being in concert with others, and these songs started coming after being with people.

Volume 6:

End of an Era//January
Aretha I've Been Trying//February
Every Other Road//March
East Palestine Blues//April
Hello, Nice to Meet You too//May
Me and my Religion//June
The Time Has Come//July
Man Oh Man//August

Well Now Marie//October
