Walking through darkness we are not alone We can’t be afraid Baby that’s what I learned from you Searching for meaning this is nothing new Just look around Baby that’s what you made me do But now it’s all falling now it's all falling away But now it’s all falling now it's all falling away Sometimes it’s simple, just a sunrise Just the starlight Baby that’s what I learned from you Even the traffic can be a good thing People are living Baby that’s what you made me do But now it’s all falling now it's all falling away But now it’s all falling now it's all falling away Without hope there’s no meaning There’s no purpose baby that’s what I learned from you But then you told me that it’s hopeless There’s no future Baby that’s what you made me do But now it’s all falling now it's all falling away But now it’s all falling now it's all falling away

Mother Stewart, thank you kindly you loved those soldier boys You gave them something for their trouble, a reason to rejoice Somewhere there’s a revolution but we’re too blind to see Laughing through the fire and rain and drowning history Mother Stewart you sailed the ocean right into the war Armed with nothing but a pen, you shut that devil’s door Somewhere there’s a revolution but were too blind to see Laughing through the fire and rain and drowning history Mother Stewart if you were here now what words would you say I suppose the biggest right among us would bow down his knees and pray Somewhere there’s a revolution but were too blind to see Laughing through the fire and rain and drowning history

Home (March) 02:38
Somewhere over that mountain On the other side of the sea Further down that old highway That’s where you’d rather be I can’t help it, I am with you Even when you go alone And you’ll always be remembered When you find yourself a home Now it’s strange every memory All the times we thought that we were lost Every truth that wasn’t spoken All the words that were tossed I can’t help it, I am with you Even though you go alone And you’ll always be remembered When you find yourself a home Somewhere a garden is growing And the water’s running clear I see you there in the sunshine And I can see me standing near I can’t help it I am with you Even though you go alone And you’ll always be remembered When you find yourself a home

The end is the beginning the beginning is the end Every friend is now a stranger every stranger is a friend I am leaving I am living I'm finally moving on In the morning I won’t be here in the morning I’ll be gone! There’s a nightmare in the dream that keeps my sleep awake all night There’s light up in the darkness and there’s darkness in the light I won’t pick up what you’re putting down no matter what you say I don’t know when I was born but it wasn’t yesterday I am leaving I am living I'm finally moving on In the morning I won’t be here in the morning I’ll be gone! We are captives in your freedom we’ve seen time and time before Oh your war it brings us peace and your peace it brings us war I feel drunk when I am sober I am sober when I drink All this thinking is so scary that I’m too afraid to think I am leaving I am living I'm finally moving on In the morning I won’t be here in the morning I’ll be gone! I won’t quit if I don’t stay here if to stay here is to quit Where my hit’s they keep on missing and my misses never hit The end is the beginning the beginning is the end Every friend is now a stranger every stranger is a friend I am leaving I am living I'm finally moving on In the morning I won’t be here in the morning I’ll be gone!

My sisters and my brothers when you are troubled I know a place where you can go On the outside it may look a little shabby But on the inside the love it flows Now everybody it’s a revelation, it’s reconciliation Gotta stop being bad Now everybody it’s a restoration, it’s rehabilitation Gotta start giving back On the inside there are people telling stories And they’ve got others singing songs real sweet When you’re hungry they’ll give you a little something And when you’re tired you can rest those weary feet Now everybody it’s a reconsideration it’s restitution Gotta stop being bad Now everybody it’s a revolution, it’s reclamation Gotta start giving back Now I admit that this ain’t Mecca and it ain’t Rome It ain’t Jerusalem, but it’s home It’s people who are wandering, longing to be free People just like you, and just like me Now everybody it’s a reformation it’s recompensation Gotta stop being bad Now everybody it’s a renovation, it’s resuscitation Gotta start giving back

I know this fellow who smokes just to get mellow 'til all the walls are yellow where he lives And he was married to a beauty till she turned into a foodie, says now it’s her duty to educate and give Life finds a way, life finds a way, life finds a way of taking toll Life it always finds a way And his father is a man who drinks his beers straight from the can until he cannot even stand and walk away As he blows right through his money he laughs at things that are not funny and he acts like it’s all sunny and okay Life finds a way, life finds a way, life finds a way of taking toll Life it always finds a way I used to get this feeling that there wasn’t any ceiling but the days they started stealing all the years Oh and time it kept it taking and all confidence kept breaking and mistakes I kept on making reappeared Life finds a way, life finds a way, life finds a way of taking toll Life it always finds a way Life finds a way, life finds a way, life finds a way of taking toll Life it always finds a way Life finds a way, life finds a way, life finds a way of taking toll Life it always finds a way

It’s been a long long time since I’ve stopped thinking Sometimes it’s just so hard It’s been a while since you’ve stopped searching Side by side and far apart It’s a wonder that we aren’t lost When the fires rain down they just keep coming Sometimes it’s just so hard When the shadows fall, we’re tired of running Side by side and far apart It’s a wonder that we aren’t gone Oh darling everything that you’re saying Sometimes it’s just so hard Oh Jesus now you’ve got me praying Side by side and far apart It’s a wonder that we aren’t lost Oh father now I understand you Sometimes it’s just so hard Oh mother I could never blame you Side by side and far apart It’s a wonder that we aren’t gone It’s been a long long time since I’ve stopped thinking Sometimes it’s just so hard It’s been a while since you’ve stopped searching Side by side and far apart It’s a wonder that we aren’t lost That we aren’t lost That we aren’t lost

Up on the mountain another dogwood dies And down in the valley a coyote cries And out on the highway I can hear its lonesome sound Driving from that city where they beat me down, down, down And all the people walk and talk about Things that make you twist Things that make you shout But there’s a forest floor And a river’s edge And a starry night Deep inside my head And in a dark arena Dwight Yoakam sings About forgotten spaces, forgotten everything And somewhere in his heartache there’s a silver line What takes away your trust will give you one more rhyme, rhyme, rhyme And all the people walk and talk about Things that make you twist Things that make you shout But there’s a forest floor And a river’s edge And the smell of rain Deep inside my head And here in the west I watch freedom die But somewhere in the east I hear a freedom cry And up there in the north the ice it melts away But down in the south it’s growing day by day by day All the people walk and talk about Things that make you twist Things that make you shout But there’s a forest floor And a river’s edge And a blue jay call Deep inside my head There’s a forest floor And a river’s edge Deep inside my head And a starry night There’s a forest floor And a river’s edge And the smell of rain Deep inside my head…

I saw a woman yesterday, she looked like you, old memories came rushing back again I almost went and lost my head, and forgot what’s real, so happy now I didn’t check back in Every inspiration, every motivation, every conversation with you All the elevation, all of the sedation, all the things we said we shouldn’t do Is it funny, is it sad, is it good, is it bad, sometimes I still cannot decide Motorcycles, waterfalls, railroad tracks, shopping malls, either way it was quite a ride Every inspiration, every motivation, every conversation with you All the elevation, all of the sedation, all the things we said we shouldn’t do Forever smile forever fun, forever health, forever young, I see now our pictures are a lie Is it better once you know, is it easy come and easy go this doesn’t mean that you should never try Every inspiration, every motivation, every conversation with you All the elevation, all of the sedation, all the things we said we shouldn’t do
10.
There were lights on the dance floor and fire in your eyes There was love in your whispers, such lovely lies The more tender the moment the deeper the bruise The more you gain the more you lose O Ruby I thought that we were different That we had something that it was true Oh Ruby I would have walked the desert Or climbed a mountain to be with you He was handsome and heavy and high as a kite And he came in ready like a fox in the night You fell for his whispers you fell for his lies And we disappeared as you said your goodbyes O Ruby I thought that we were different That we had something that it was true Oh Ruby I would have walked the desert Or climbed a mountain to be with you And is there hope for the hopeless or sight for the blind? Is there love on this earth is there peace of mind? Is there solace and beauty will flowers still grow? Oh Ruby I’d like to know O Ruby I thought that we were different That we had something that it was true Oh Ruby I would have walked the desert Or climbed a mountain to be with you
11.
Is it true that you are leaving could it be that you won’t stay Is it finally now or never for the things that I should say Oh my words they don’t come easy While my thoughts they move too fast If it’s true that you are leaving I can’t see how this will pass I hear the children in the distance there is laughter in the air Will their laughter ever come back when find that you’re not there Oh my words they don’t come easy While my thoughts they move too fast If it’s true that you are leaving I can’t see how this will pass As the sun it keeps on rising and the river never dries As autumn olives keep on growing my love it will not die And my words they don’t come easy While my thoughts they move too fast If it’s true that you are leaving I can’t see how this will pass
12.
Everyone, this one for the ages, like it’s written on pages That you’re sorry you read It reminds me of a terrible story like some bad memory That won’t leave your head If you can’t see it then you might be it And this makes it so sad If you know it you can’t show it The things you thought that you had aren’t real Everyone, history is living and it keeps on giving Like it always gave The rulers they never stop ruling and they never stop fooling You need them to be saved If you can’t see it then you might be it And this makes it so sad If you know it you can’t show it The things you thought that you had aren’t real Everyone, the future ain’t pretty things are gonna get gritty There’s a cloud all around But I suppose we’ve still got today, they can’t take that away We aren’t bound to be bound No, No No, No

about

Series Notes:

"Homes Sessions Volume 5" is a song-of-the-month project as a follow up to Volumes 1-4 in which one new song is released each month.

For Volume 1, each song was a live recording into my computer mic (with no layering or editing), and involved anyone I happened to be around that year. This project involved Sister Sarah (February), the MRB (October), and even a Turkish band (May) I played with during some time spent in eastern Turkey during that year.

For Volume 2, I had a new mic which helped to improve the quality, and tried out some layering as well. Things got a little crazy with some songs, (September) but it sure was fun.

Volume 3 included more collaboration, with friends both home and far away, and even at a live show with the audience.

Volume 4 was a mix of no layering, collaboration, and revisiting some older songs I had written.

Volume 5 came out of the 2020-21 lockdowns. Some songwriters were prolific during that time, but not me. During this time I realized a lot of inspiration for writing songs comes from being in concert with others, and these songs started coming after being with people.
