about

Eliza Stewart (1816-1908), also known as "Mother" Stewart was a leader in the American temperance movement. Her career took her far and wide, and she was quite a force to be reckoned with, helping people along the way, including the post Civil War "soldier boys" who attempted to ease their pain through alcohol.

In recent years, a beloved brewery in her hometown of Springfield, Ohio celebrated her by naming their establishment after Mother. After reading about her life, I thought I'd write this song, which had it's debut live performance in Mother Stewart's Brewery.

lyrics

Mother Stewart, thank you kindly you loved those soldier boys
You gave them something for their trouble, a reason to rejoice

Somewhere there’s a revolution but we’re too blind to see
Laughing through the fire and rain and drowning history

Mother Stewart you sailed the ocean right into the war
Armed with nothing but a pen, you shut that devil’s door

Somewhere there’s a revolution but were too blind to see
Laughing through the fire and rain and drowning history

Mother Stewart if you were here now what words would you say
I suppose the biggest right among us would bow down his knees and pray

Somewhere there’s a revolution but were too blind to see
Laughing through the fire and rain and drowning history
